Recognize irritable bowel syndrome Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), is a disorder of the functioning of the intestine (colon or large intestine), not serious but responsible for significant discomfort. WHAT IS IRRITABLE GUT SYNDROME? Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) also known as Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) is a combination of disorders in the functioning of the bowel including: abdominal pain discomfort, intestinal transit disorders (constipation, diarrhea or alternation of the two). We also speak of functional colopathy. It is a frequent disease which affects around 5% of the French population. It is not serious, but because of its chronicity, it affects the quality of life of people who suffer from it. The diagnosis is usually made between the ages of 30 and 40. More rarely, this syndrome can appear in children and adolescents. Women are twice as affected as men by bowel syndrome or irritable bowel syndrome.
